We Welcome You to Kvačany
You have come to a Liptov village which the territory was donated by King Belo IV in 1256 to Mayor Aundrej of Banska Bystrica. This row village along the Kvačany stream with 600 inhabitants is situated on the northwest border of a valley and is lying under the cliffs of the Choč Mountains. In Kvačany you will meet warm, friendly people and see the Church of Saint Katarina. This church was orginally gothic and its rnnstruction started in the fourteenth century. People, for the sake of interest and culture, continue to have and use traditional wooden house and various elements of smaller wooden arcitecture.
The Kvačany Valley is cut into limestone and dolomite formations. The valley lies between Black Mountain (Čierna Hora) and Ostra Mountain. In the Kvačany Valley, with well perserved geology, Porest and protected flora and fauna, are two old water mills. One mill for grinding grain and the other for lumber. These two mills are rare technical monuments. From these two mills you are close to the communities of Huty, Malé and VeIké Borové: all with well-perserved traditional architecture.
Flirther to the west of the Kvačany Valley is the Prosiek Valley, approximately 1/2 hours hike from the Kvačany Valley. Here you will have the chance to see rock formations and natural phenomenom. Near the end of the valley is a 15 meter high waterfall, Red Sands, that can be reached with the help of ladders. Tourist who are not afraid of a one and half hour or more hike and who want to see a remarkable view of the Choč Mountains we greatly recommend that you visit the Prosiek Valley.
Kvačany and Prosiek Valleys are two of the most beautiful valleys in the Liptov Region if not Slovakia. There is a loop trail that connects the two valleys and it is one of th more favorite trails in the region. The valleys are different:
Prosiek Valley is dry, arid and sometimes inpassable during very wet weather. The Kvačany valley is overgrown with vegetation and the stream flows all year. There are sheep farms on the high mountain meadows between the two valleys.
From Kvačany you can visit the High, Low and West Tatra Mountains. Also in this region is the Demänovska Valley, Demänovska Ice Cave and Cave of Freedom. Thermal bath complexs are in both Liptovský Ján and Bešenova. The village of Vlkolínec, a UNESCO designated village of unique and cutlure importance typical for the Liptov Region, is near Ružomberok. The church in Paludza is one of the largest wooden churchs in Slovakia. It was constructed without the use of nails. In the first days of July in the village of Východna is a folklore festival.
15 km from Kvačany is the city Liptovský Mikuláš, where you can see the Mikuláš Synagoge, The literature and History Museum of Janko Kral, catholic church, and the Pongrácovska Mansion.
At the Information Center in Kvačany you can rent mountain Bicycles: and for horse lovers you can rent three sport horses from Ing. Mioslav Čendula also in Kvačany.
4 km from Kvačany is the reservoir Liptovská Mara covering 27 square kilometers and up to 43 meters in depth. Here you can rent small boats, water bicycles, windsurfs, other sporting needs and have a chance to refresh yourself.
